What is the Working Student Program? The Working Student Program at Columbia Horse Center is designed to provide a fun and educational opportunity for our students to learn more about horsemanship. We also strive to teach our students about the importance of responsibility, in a simulation of a real-life work experience.
What do Working Students Do? Working Students keep the lesson program running smoothly. Specific duties will vary, depending on experience, age, and the needs of the barn during their shifts. Examples are: Smiling and providing a warm welcome to everyone entering the barn; sweeping the barn aisles; filling water buckets; cleaning stalls; loading and distributing hay; grooming and tacking horses and ponies for lessons; leading horses/ponies in lessons when needed; picking up and cleaning the barn and surrounding areas; and cleaning tack.
What are the benefits? For every 8 hours of quality work you provide, you will receive a special Working Student Lesson. Lessons for each level of rider are assigned to certain days and times. If you are unable to make the scheduled lesson, speak with Sue to arrange an alternate lesson. In addition to the Working Student Lessons, we provide a wide variety of activities including field trips, clinics, practice rides, trail rides and many more events.
What are the requirements? You must be 12 years of age or older, and you must have been in the lesson program for at least two months and remain current with your regular lessons. The Working Student lesson is a 2nd lesson. Contact Sue and arrange to attend one of our Working Student Training Sessions. Just a reminder: we do also have several Adult Working Students. It's a great opportunity to get out of the house.
